A large number of industrial gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and argon are used in the smelting process of iron and steel enterprises. Oxygen is mainly used in blast furnace, melting reduction smelting furnace, converter, electric furnace smelting; Nitrogen is mainly used for furnace sealing, protective gas, steelmaking and refining, converter slag splashing and furnace protection, security gas, heat transfer medium and system purge, etc. Argon gas is mainly used for steelmaking and refining. In order to meet production requirements and ensure safe and stable operation, large steel plants are equipped with special oxygen production stations and oxygen-nitrogen-argon power pipe network systems.

At present, the conventional processes of large-scale full-process iron and steel enterprises are: coke oven, sintering, blast furnace steelmaking, converter electric steelmaking, steel rolling, etc. Due to the emphasis on environmental protection and the simplification of technological process, the international iron and steel industry has developed a short process process in the pre-iron area in modern times -- melting reduction and smelting iron, directly reducing the iron ore raw material into molten iron in a smelting furnace.

There is a big difference in the amount of industrial gas required by two different smelting processes. The amount of oxygen required by the conventional blast furnace accounts for 28% of the total oxygen demand of the steel plant, and the amount of oxygen required for steelmaking accounts for 40% of the total oxygen demand of the steel plant. The amount of oxygen required by smelting reduction (COREX) process accounts for 78% of the total amount of iron required by steel mills, and the amount of oxygen required by steel mills accounts for 13% of the total amount of oxygen required by steel mills.

The above two processes have been promoted in China, especially the melting reduction iron-making process.
